BetaOrionis

I'm not here now.

Posted by BetaOrionis Sep. 13, 2009 @ 2:10 AM EDT

Film production is a long, tiring, exciting, and expensive process. And it will be what I am living, breathing, eating, and sleeping until it is complete. I'm throwing everything I am into this; my first film. An optimistic estimate predicts that I'll be done with production and into post by January, and done with post by May. Optimistic indeed.

I'm willingly in over my head. It feels good.

Stunt Suggestion blog.

Posted by BetaOrionis Jun. 17, 2009 @ 8:55 PM EDT

If you have any ideas for original, dangerous stunts that you'd like to see performed and recorded, post them. If they aren't retarded and I have a higher than 90% chance of not getting killed, I'll most likely do them and record it, edit, and embed them here.

This blog is mostly just to keep me motivated to go out and record more things, more often. I won't take on a project that'll take more than a day or two to complete, or that will be expensive as fuck, so don't expect me to wreck my car, rent a plane, or burn a building.

Good Examples:
Jump from car roof onto a truck.
Catch roman candle blast with hand.

See, they are dangerous but not impossible, don't cost much to perform, can be done anywhere, and I can't find a youtube video of either being done.

Bad Examples:
Jump off empire state building. (lower than 90% chance of survival / unoriginal)
Kill zombie with chop sticks. (zombies are not easy to come by)
Sky dive. (expensive / not dangerous / unoriginal)

"This review is insanely well received!"

Posted by BetaOrionis Sep. 14, 2008 @ 7:03 AM EDT

People think this is a useless review.
There's some debate, but overall people think this is a useless review.
No users have weighed in on this review.
People aren't in agreement over whether this is helpful or not.
There's some debate, but overall people think this review is helpful!
People find this review helpful!
Lot's of people find this review helpful!
This review is insanely well received!

What the fuck? I didn't know that level of helpfulness existed, and I've never seen it before, anywhere. Nor does it have a negated counterpart of "completely and utterly useless," or does it?

Here's what happened.

I'd heard that most users have a tendency to rate reviews' helpfulness based primarily on whether or not the score agrees with what they feel is deserved, and don't take the content into account unless it's worth a whistle point. Around the same time, I was really loving "The Pen is Mightier...", and when I went to Allen Awesome's blog, I found this:

AND THEN THE HATE MAIL:

It's relentless. The shear volume of people who vote down my submissions because they like Water Lollies better. And I know my work isn't even approaching that of Adam Phillips. Look, I understand that Water Lollies is just like a visual orgasm, though, in my opinion, lacking in plot. Not to say my latest submission was at all "thrilling". It's just like some kind of running gag. I submit something I've been working on for a while. It gets great reviews. Then it gets voted up above Water Lollies. That's when it starts. I getter PM after PM, comment after comment, berating me about how my work is shit compared to Water Lollies and it shouldn't be so popular. Look, it's not like I wave some kind of wand and force my work up to the top. It's not like my work just pops up there in a couple seconds. It's a process, that takes days. If you don't want my work above Water Lollies then just give it a bad score before it gets up there. Because, seriously, I'd rather have a shit score than an inbox full of shit talking. So please, use you head. Thnx! XD

So after reading this, I was like "damn." So I watched Waterlollies again . . . on YouTube cause I just can't do it here. And I found myself agreeing with Allen's point. Then I want on a whole big Adam Phillips research thing, checking his blogs, his YouTube account, his favorites, and all his submissions. I discovered HitchHiker: Parts One and Two, in my opinion his most interesting work which, for whatever reason, he never really concluded. Compared to HitchHiker, the entire Brackenwood saga was crap.

Anyway, I ended going on a rant, filling up the entire review space for Waterlollies with a super-massive essay of a review, even quoting some shit he'd said on one of his blogs. At the end, I slapped a fairly undeserved ZERO STARS on top of it, and hit submit.

After about 10 minutes, it was helpful.
By the end of that day, it dropped down to useless.
The day after, it was debatably helpful.
That night it was helpful again.
A week later, lot's of people found it helpful.

When this happened, I was like, "Wow, the NG admins programmed a very helpful, I wonder why there's no very useless?" Maybe there is, people usually don't feel compelled to vote a review useless if it already is. Maybe I've just never seen it. Have any of you seen "very useless"?

When I checked back today, a month and a half after posting it, the review was "insanely well received". I was like, "Holy shit, it just keeps going!"

Has anyone seen anything like this before? And does anyone know if there are higher tiers of helpfulness? For that matter, does anyone know anything about how many pluses or minuses are needed to reach each tier?

Banned.

Posted by BetaOrionis Aug. 27, 2008 @ 3:49 AM EDT

I created a thread about school shootings. The Mods felt that it violated the BBS Rules. The thread was deleted, and I received a ban. Interesting.

I checked the rules, and the ban checks out, but I can't help but raise an eyebrow at NG. If you go to the NG Literature page and scroll to the bottom, you'll see NG showing off how bad and rebellious it is by displaying received hatemail concerning the violence depicted on the site. Mostly in relation to works by Tom Fulp.

But my thread doesn't seem very out of place among the works of the site's creator. Assassin, Club a Seal, Pico's School and other related Pico flashes, Chainsaw the Children, etc. Tom has displayed violence of every type and form, from interactive suicides, to games in which your goal is to beat as kids as possible. And these are the things that got the site going. They are what the site is known for. Games like Torture Chamber 2 continue to gain the site recognition. But no. A thread discussing a hypothetical scenario in which your goal is to rack up a high head count and do massive damage to a building is apparently unfit for our clean little site.

If it were an interactive game there would be no problem, so why not a forum topic?

Thoughts, anyone?

. . .

What now?

That's the general mood among my peers right now. A bunch of them have just graduated with an assortment of degrees and no one can get a job. The U.S. economy is so disgusting right now. Lucky me, I've still got time, another year or so, and then I too, am doomed.

The free-lance world awaits.

Amazingly FAIL Threads

Posted by BetaOrionis Apr. 21, 2008 @ 2:36 AM EDT

Just a list of threads that were (1) not created by noobs, and (2) failed horribly.

Storage

Posted by BetaOrionis Oct. 24, 2007 @ 12:03 AM EDT

The news post that was here was gay, so I've converted it to a storage space for my expired blurbs and whatnot.

Blurbs
"I happen to be the greatest genius you will ever meet, but also the biggest underachiever, making me cleverly indistinguishable from all the genuinely dimwitted morons around us."

"Violence is the second-to-last resort."
